How long does an employer take to respond to your resume if interested?

I've submitted so many resumes so far (out of state) and haven't heard from anyone yet. It's not the fact of being unqualified....So typically how long does the human resource department take to get back to you if interested?

Normally in 1-3 weeks.

how long it takes depends on many factors- are they hiring? are they understaffed? how many resumes did they receive that day?

Instead of waiting for them, you have got to establish contact. Follow up to ensure that they have received it, then ask for a specific date that you can expect to hear from them. Especially since you are out of state you need to make contact.

When you send out your resumes, are you sending them to someone that you have spoken with or exchanged email? That ensures a much faster response. Before you send anything, call the compnay ask for the hiring manager or director. You may get passed on the human resources. The key is to speak to a person, get their name and send the resume directly to them. They will be on the lookout for your name and it adds a little more of apersonal touch.

Best of luck to you!

It depends on the company. It also depends on the type of position, how much they have to do in order to determine that they've got the right person, are there second interviews, etc. Also, depends how well organized the company is, who is running the HR department, if there even is one. In short, you can hear from them the same day or you may never hear from them.

Some companies will call you or email you to let you know you did not make it, some will not. It depends on who is in charge of that. They may not have the time to call you, or they just do not due to a lack of time.

I was in charge of filling a couple of empty positions and with several hundred resumes coming in daily, you can't contact everyone, even those who are qualified. If there are 10 other people that day who show the same qualifications as you, maybe only the 5 with the prettier resume will get called. You just don't know.

There is no simple answer to this.

I had the same experience several months ago prior to moving to another state. I started early and tried to find a position to move to. In my experience I had a much better experience once I had a local address for businesses to respond to.

I'm guessing in a lot of cases companies are looking at your resume and when they see that you don't even live in the area yet are tossing it aside as likely being a hassle to work out logistically. How are they going to interview you, when would you be available to start, considering you live in another state, etc.

This is of course assuming that you're intending to relocate. If you're not and the employer is looking for an out of state employee.. well.. I just posted a position for my company yesterday with the ad set to run a month. We received 15 responses in the first 10 min it was up. Sometimes it's just not feasible to contact each person. Each company is different and there is no rhyme or reason to when and if a company will contact you.

A week or so
