How do I stop being a "secretary?"?

I am currently looking for a new job. I am an Administrative Assistant at a bank. I do the same job everyday. I am looking for something still along the administrative lines but not the regular "secretary stuff." Typing, faxing Travel &calendar managment. I am am very, bright and have a degree in Busuness Management, but everytime I send my resume out, I get the same offers. HELP!!!

I think it's great that you want to further your career. One approach you should consider is to make a change within your current employer. When people take the initiative to volunteer for things outside of their set responsibilities and perform well, I think most employers will provide additional opportunities for growth. You are basically helping to create your own opportunities. I would suggest thinking critically at whether you are taking full advantage of your current situation.

The other possibility is to obtain another job, which is what you are currently trying to do. Here, I think you should have people you know critically look at your resume and tell you how they think you are selling yourself. In your resume, focus on your achievements rather than your responsibilities. If your resume says you are an administrative assistant that answers telephones, typing, making travel arrangements, etc., then those are the sort of jobs you are going to be offered. On the other hand, if your resume says that you are an administrative assistant that has improved the bank in 5 different and interesting ways, then you may get noticed by a potential employer for what you could bring to their office. If you can't think of any achievements, then that is a good reason to focus on your current job in order to build up your resume.

Bottom line...your resume is a sales document that says who you are, what you've accomplished and what you could bring to another employer. If you are getting the same job offers, chances are that you aren't selling yourself in the best possible way! Ask people you know for feedback!

That is hard to get out of the rut. When I started out working after college I was stuck in the administrative professional field. I would shoot for jobs you are interested in and if they suggest an admin job for you tell them you are looking to grow into another career path. Someone will give you an opportunity.

Best Wishes.
